Alber Elbaz: His Living Legacy

As if from a James Bond scene where 007 hears the croupier state “Mesdames et messieurs, fai-tes vos jeux” the instant before turning the roulette wheel, the fashion world is once again spinning on its head as Alber Elbaz’s ends his tenure at Lanvin, a post he has held since 2001. This unex-pected departure makes him the fashion world’s #1 Most Wanted designer and, coincidentally, a target to take over Christian Dior following last week’s news that Raf Simons decided to end his tenure there.

Alber Elbaz is a wonderful creator on all accounts, a man who understands design and fit, knows how to drape and has an impressive ability to reference history while making garments look and feel contemporary. His impressive resume, including working for Geoffrey Beene in New York for close to a decade and having been personally hand-picked by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé to take over the label (before being ousted by Tom Ford), has demonstrated his malleable savvy and creative resilience.

Fresh at Lanvin, he re-energized the dormant label with a steady retro-Parisian vibe. His work emphasized a look that embraced late 1970s and early 1980s Glam fashion photography, favoring jewel toned textiles and countless fur accents that transitioned fancy daywear into eveningwear-appropriate looks. Many of his designs offered a veiled homage to the work of Yves Saint Laurent (something Hedi Slimane is fully missing at Saint Laurent to this day).
