Fur for Everyday

Instead of saving it for special occasions, try wearing fur in a casual way, everyday

Maria Murray doesn’t believe in saving fur for special occasions.

“You don’t want to spend $25,000 for a fur you wear once to the opera,” said Ms. Murray, founder of luxury fur label Lilly e Violetta. “It’s fantastic to see fun put into fur. People tend to see it as old lady-ish.”

In her view, women should be able to wear a mink jacket with the ease of a favorite cardigan. Her designs take into account “career girls” and working mothers who are on the go, like herself. Lilly e Violetta is named after her two daughters, aged 10 and 12, respectively, and is sold at high-end retailers including Harrods, in London, and Barneys New York.

Ms. Murray started the label 2½ years ago, while still a banker in London, after girlfriends admired the short, sporty, and versatile ones she bought in Italy. The label specializes in handmade, contemporary spins on fur.
