According to Industry Canada, Canada's fur industry was valued at $335 Million in 2001.

But in U.S there are approximately 1500 retailer and just over 100 manufacturers-most of which are family run and passed from generation to generation-

U.S. Retail Fur Sales:
2005--$1.82 Billion
2004--$1.80 Billion
2003--$1.79 Billion
2002--$1.70 Billion

In the global fur market, the U.S ranks among the top countries for retail fur sales, other top countries include Russia, China and Italy.

Fur industry in CHINA Growing!

"
Fur may be falling out of favour in many places, but the industry is thriving in northeastern China.

China is the world's largest exporter of fur garments and the number of fur farms have mushroomed in the past ten years, especially in the cold, northern region of Heilongjiang province.

Chinese customs statistics indicate a net volume of fur imports and exports for 2003 of $997.6 million U.S. dollars, up 42.5% from 2002. According to local industry experts, the level of production for fur in northeastern China has been increasing steadily by 10% per year since 2004.

A growing number of international fur traders, processors and fashion designers have gradually shifted their business to China, according to a forum held by the China Leather and Fur Association in November 2008. "

Hi NY,
Here is some info for you on the industry most recently;
This year's fur-auction season got under way several weeks ago, and already at Kopenhagen Fur in Denmark, one of the world's largest fur auction houses, pelt prices are down about 30% from a year ago.

Sandy Parker, a fur analyst who has followed the industry for more than 30 years, faults the economy. The two biggest fur markets -- Russia and China -- have "placed stiff controls on the outflow of hard currency, thus severely limiting what" trade buyers at auctions can spend, he says. In addition, the Russian fur business, which grew rapidly as oil wealth rose, is being hit hard by tight credit.

"Credit cards, bank lines -- that market isn't happening for us right now," says Michael Mengar, chief executive of Toronto-based North American Fur Auctions, which used to be part of the original Hudson Bay Co., founded in 1670.

The drying up of the Russian fur business is hitting places like Kastoria. The small Greek town, whose name, some say, is derived from the Greek word for "beaver," is one of the world's main fur-manufacturing hubs. Merchants there import pelts from around the world and turn them into garments for export.

May 2009- Fur Industry Update 10 Years, 3 Months ago Karma: 5
There has been positive develoment in the industry and here are some of them.

-The North American Fur Fair Exposition (NAFFEM) in Montreal exceeded the trade expectations. The show was smaller, but sales were up this year.
-NAFA: There was over 250 buyers form all the major markets, May 2009 Auction attracted bigger crowd then March 2009.
-American Legend's final sale of the season. which attracted a healthy attandance.
-Fur Harvesters' ofering was smaller but percentage turnovers were comparable to those at NAFA.
-Concsumer confidence in the U.S. Economy, which had shown pick up since April, advanced further in May to its highest level since last September.
