THE ANIMAL WELFARE PLATFORM WILL STRENGTHEN THE PUBLIC DEBATE

Many European associations and NGOs are currently waiting to see if they have obtained a seat on the European Commission’s upcoming European Animal Welfare Platform, writes Mette Lykke Nielsen, CEO of Fur Europe.
The European fur sector organised under the umbrella of Fur Europe is no exception from other animal-related NGOs. We will be pleased if we are offered a seat in the Animal Welfare Platform.
Seeing as the platform is an extension of the European Commission’s Welfare Quality project with the objective to exchange information, knowledge and best practices, Fur Europe will be more in the giving end than the receiving end of the platform.

RIIGIKOGU REJECTS BILL BANNING FUR FARMS
The Riigikogu on Wednesday rejected a bill that would outlaw fur farming in Estonia over a period of ten years.
In its first reading, 49 MPs voted for the rejection of the bill to amend the Animal Protection Act and the Nature Conservation Act, while 24 MPs voted for going on with the legislative initiative, one MP was undecided and 18 abstained.
The bill called for imposing a ban on the farming of animals only or primarily for the purpose of fur production, as well as breeding and reproduction only or mainly for the purpose of fur production. The ban would have stepped into force beginning Jan. 1, 2028.
